The Vermont Department of Health is considering using two mobile methadone
clinics to reach residents who live in the Northeast Kingdom
section of the state, the Caledonian Record reported July 20.
One of the vans would be located in the Newport City area, while the other would
serve St. Johnsbury.
Barbara Cimaglio of the state Department of Health said the vans would give individuals
addicted to heroin better access to methadone treatment. She said the need for
treatment in the Northeast Kingdom is high. Currently, patients are transported
to Burlington or clinics in New Hampshire or Massachusetts.
During a public hearing on the proposal, most residents supported two mobile
clinics over a fixed-based dispensary.
The state received two bids from care providers for the project. Cimaglio said
a proposal from a California firm has been accepted.
